About the Author
I’m a party girl! As a child my parents were the King and Queen of parties. This royal couple threw parties for everything. My parents used parties to fulfill obligations, get acquainted with new neighbors, business associates or just to gather old and new friends. Everyone loved the parties even my brother and I. When planning a Chinese Party my parents took my brother and me prior to the party, to Chinatown for the day. We shopped in the gift shops for games, Chinese puzzles, a red dragon and a string of Chinese lanterns. We ate lunch at one of the Chinese restaurants and then continued to shop; picking up three pounds of noodles dough squares at the noodle factory for homemade egg rolls. Our last stop was the Chinese vegetables for the egg rolls and other dishes. The entire family was involved in preparing for the party. We chopped the vegetables, making homemade egg rolls, hanging lanterns and setting tables.
Another party was in our first home; I can remember our family did not have a basement. It would have been easy for my parents to say, “We don’t have room to entertain”, but they love people and parties. So they planned a Hawaiian Luau in our backyard. That night it rained and the party was moved to the garage, it turned out to be so much fun. When my parents sold this house the couple that purchased it said they wanted our house because it was the ‘Party House’. The buyer said year after year he drove by and saw the lights of our parties. He thought there was something magical about the house. Well, I’m here to tell you it is all about the people in the house.
Every party had a theme. The theme determined everything from the food to costumes, music and games. Even what the invitations will say and look like. My parents were the best teachers.
My mother was my Girl Scout leader. Yes, from that came another party, the Hobo Party, designed around a backyard camp fire. My mom went as far as enrolling me in modeling and etiquette classes, from that came the formal dinner parties. I was no stranger to polishing the silver. Whether we dressed as a hobo or in formal attire our parties were always well-planned and well-budgeted. As an adult, parties are an important tradition I continue.
We all need a get-a-way even if only for an evening. In Suburban Party books I use my Interior Design degree to enhance the experience and help create memories. Suburban Party books include suggestions for the invitation, attire, decorations, games, take-home gifts, music and the menu. The books also include a complete calendar of what to do and when to do it, so you can prepare ahead or cater in and enjoy your own party. And I’m sure you will enjoy these parties as much as I have. Just add guests!
Sincerely, Kathy
